Niacinamide aka vitamin B3, is used for a multitude of skin issues including:

  • uneven skin tone
  • dullness
  • spots/consistent and persistent blemishes
  • fine lines and proper wrinkles
  • enhancing skin barrier function

Niacinamide is water-soluble, and so can normally be found in serums. It has been shown to stimulate the dermis, in turn increasing the fatty content of the skin and helping to prevent TEWL (trans epidermal water loss).

You need this if:
It is a good ingredient for nearly all skins and can be particularly helpful for acne sufferers due to its ability to help barrier function of the epidermis and thus help in the prevention of bacterial irritants.
Combination skins, older skins, anyone that feels that their skin is uneven in tone, lacks clarity or looks dull far too often.

You don’t need this if:
You have ‘normal’ skin with good colour and are not obsessed with your pores.

Any myths attached to this ingredient?
Yes. That it doesn’t play well with others and cannot be used alongside other ingredients, especially vitamin C. Not true. Crack on.

As with all ingredients, don’t be tempted to go for a higher percentage of niacinamide just because it’s marketed as ‘stronger’ or ‘more intense’. Slow and steady wins the race and formula is Queen.
